The international paper and packaging group Mondi places a strong emphasis on Russia among many fast-growing markets. The Group’s integrated pulp and paper mill complex near Syktyvkar, the capital of the Komi Republic of Russia some 1,000km east of St. Petersburg, is one of the largest production sites within the country’s pulp and paper industry and an impressive entity in itself. Production capacity is 830,000 tons of uncoated fine paper, newsprint and containerboard per year. With 5,000 employees, the site is practically a small town.

In two years’ time Mondi Syktyvkar will be even more impressive. Acquired by Mondi in 2002, Syktyvkar has for long been on the Group’s upgrade list. Under the ongoing Project STEP, Mondi Syktyvkar is now increasing pulp production by 190,000 tons and paper and board production by 100,000 tons per year, while the existing production facilities are modernized. Project STEP will effectively rebuild the complex.

The Mondi Syktyvkar rebuild requires approximately 1,000 tons of stainless steel piping, in diameters from 17mm to 1200mm and both in standard austenitic and in duplex grades. To make piping procurement the easiest and most efficient for themselves, Mondi and their main engineering consultant Pöyry have trusted the entire deal to Outokumpu as the exclusive supplier. The deal constitutes one of Outokumpu’s largest piping supplies to date for a single project and represents a landmark deal for the Group.

Outokumpu’s distinct advantage for large projects is the ability to supply the entire range of required piping products, thanks to the Group’s portfolio of stainless steel welded pipes and fittings which is one of the widest in the industry. “As a result, a full-package delivery makes good sense for end users like Mondi Syktyvkar,” says Leonid Azheganov of the Outokumpu office in St. Petersburg, listing reasons for Mondi to select Outokumpu. He adds, “Both Mondi and Pöyry trust our quality,” referring to a long history of shared projects among the three companies.

Outokumpu plays many roles at Mondi Syktyvkar. Outokumpu is a leading supplier of stainless products, both flat and tubular, for all the main providers of pulp and paper technology, and many of these are suppliers for Mondi Syktyvkar. Imbedded in Mondi Syktyvkar’s new machinery and equipment, Outokumpu thus helps build the future of the mill complex in more ways than one.
